Mike Van ClefMike is the Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space Stewardship Director and also serves as their Invasive Species Strike Team Program Director. He co-founded the Strike Team in 2008 with the goal of bringing greater efficiency and effectiveness to invasive species management. Mike has a Ph.D. in ecology from Rutgers University and over 25 years of experience in land stewardship, planning and research, working extensively in the evaluation and management of rare and invasive species and deer management. He has consulted with over 30 organizations in NJ including the NJ Invasive Species Council for which he prepared the New Jersey Strategic Management Plan for Invasive Species.

"Native Plants and the Invasive Plants They Replace"

Mike will focus on native plant gardening, emphasizing those that resemble or functionally replace popular invasive species counterparts. He will cover ways to protect your plantings to increase choices.

"Deer Resistant Native Plants for Your Garden "

This talk goes over various landscape uses for native plants ranging from meadow patches to formal gardens. It focuses on selection of native plants based on their functions (e.g., screening, foundation plantings, plants for shade, etc.), emphasizing the value these plants provide to birds, bees and butterflies — contributing to increasing the health of our natural world. The talk also covers how to select deer resistant plants and develop creative ways to protect any native plant from marauding deer.
